Operations Technology Systems Engineer

**About the Role**

International Paper is seeking an Automation Engineer with a strong background in operational technology (OT) systems who can bridge both cybersecurity support and process control engineering. This role will play a key part in protecting and modernizing our manufacturing environments – supporting asset discovery and backup solutions, while driving transformative projects to securely connect our machines to the cloud for advanced data collection and analytics.

This role is a hybrid of engineering expertise and cybersecurity knowledge, ideal for someone who can both design operational technology (OT) networks and roll up their sleeves in the field. You’ll thrive here if you are equally comfortable coding in a PLC, designing secure architectures, and guiding teams through change.

**Required Skills:**

+ Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer, Industrial Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).

+ 5+ years in automation engineering or OT systems support, with a strong preference for experience in pulp & paper mills, corrugated packaging facilities, or large-scale manufacturing operations with similar machine/OT networks.

+ Hands-on experience programming with PLCs, DCS, HMIs, and/or related infrastructure.

+ Familiarity with OT cybersecurity principles and solutions; experience with Claroty (or similar platform).

+ Experience with AMDT Octoplant (or similar platform) for OT backup, version control, etc.

+ Strong knowledge of industrial networking and secure data collection (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, OPC, firewalls, switching and routing, etc.)

+ Experience developing technical documentation, system drawings, and standard operating procedures for OT solutions.

+ Excellent communication and collaboration skills – able to explain technical concepts to non-experts and build consensus across diverse teams.

**Plusses:**

+ Experience with edge devices and cloud integration (AWS, Azure, etc.) for industrial data. Knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks (NIST, ISA/IEC 62443) in industrial environments. Experience in large-scale transformation projects involving OT and IT convergence.
