JOB SUMMARY

The Pre-Anesthesia Clinic (PAC) Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive preoperative assessment, care coordination and patient education through a combination of onsite clinic coverage and flexible PAC call shifts. This role supports surgical readiness by ensuring accurate documentation, timely pre-op optimization and high-quality patient communication. The schedule includes flexible start times and variable shift lengths to meet patient volume, accommodate staffing needs and support work/life balance.

This position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of Blessing Hospital. Key Responsibilities:

1. Pre-Anesthesia Clinic (Onsite)

+ Conduct face-to-face preoperative assessments and focused physicals.

+ Review medications, allergies, comorbidities, labs, imaging, and consult requirements.

+ Prepare patients for anesthesia evaluation and optimize readiness for surgery.

+ Provide patient education on pre-op instructions, NPO guidelines, and post-op expectations.

+ Coordinate care with anesthesiologists, surgeons, secretaries, and LPNs.

2. PAC Call Responsibilities (Remote or Onsite)

+ Perform scheduled pre-op telephone assessments with accuracy and efficiency.

+ Complete calls within standard benchmarks (ex: 12 calls per shift goal, <60-minute appointment duration).

+ Verify chart readiness, home medications, allergies, and risk factors.

+ Identify and escalate cases requiring NP/MD review.

+ Document thoroughly in the EMR and follow workflows aligned with Epic/organizational standards.

3. Care Coordination & Documentation

+ Utilize standardized workflows, templates, and checklists to ensure completeness.

+ Apply informed-consent, pre-procedure, and pre-optimization criteria consistently.

+ Communicate with surgeons’ clinics regarding missing information, abnormal findings, or scheduling issues

4. Teamwork & Continuous Improvement

+ Participate in PAC huddles, daily scheduling, and staffing distribution for calls vs. clinic.

+ Provide input for process improvements (Lean, workflow redesign, value analysis).

+ Support teamwork across RN, LPN, secretary, and NP groups.

5. Schedule & Flexibility Expectations

+ Flexible scheduling options to support clinic coverage, PAC call volume, and staff availability.

+ Options may include: 6 or 8 hour shifts (48 total hours per pay period)

+ Flexible start times between 0700–1000 depending on assignment

+ Blend of clinic days and dedicated call days

+ Ability to flex between roles based on volume and staffing

+ Occasional early start/late finish during high-volume days or before holidays.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training/Experience:

REQUIRED:

+ Current RN license (state specific)

+ Minimum 1-2 years of clinical nursing; perioperative, ambulatory or acute care preferred

+ Strong assessment, communication and clinical judgment skills

+ Comfort with a fast-paced, high-volume environment

+ Demonstrated ability to work independently and follow standardized workflows

+ Experience with electronic medical records; EPIC preferred

PREFERRED:

+ Pre-anesthesia, PACU or surgical services experience

+ Familiarity with optimization guidelines, STOP-Bang, chronic disease management and anesthesia risk screening

+ Time management and call efficiency skills (aiming for 12-15 calls/day)

+ Ability to adapt to workflow changes and contribute to quality improvement initiatives

+ Accurate and complete chart readiness

+ Contribution to department productivity goals (e.g., WHPUOS, call volume benchmarks)

+ Positive patient experience and teamwork feedback

License/Certifications/Special Requirements:

+ Possesses current State RN license.
