JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Under general supervision, individual:

• performs initial specimen accessioning and processing

• performs gross examination and descriptions of tissue specimens

• performs specimen frozen sectioning and Hematoxylin and Eosin staining

• acts as diener with responsibility for all aspects of the autopsy room and morgue, tissue and slide storage.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education

Education AND training equivalent to an associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology:

- Education - 60 semester hours including either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses (6 hours of chemistry; 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours in chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology, or any combination.

-Training – either completion of an approved/accredited clinical laboratory training program, which may be included in the 60 semester hours specified above or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing

Required Skills

1. Knowledge of good histologic methods and techniques.

2. Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques and equipment.

3. Ability to do precise and accurate work.

4. Ability to get along with others.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

New Hire / Annual Competencies

1. Employee demonstrates basic understanding of specimen requirements and handling.

2. Employee demonstrates proper patient and specimen identification to ensure patient safety.

3. Employee demonstrates proper patient and specimen identification to ensure patient safety.

4. Employee demonstrates understanding of safe practices and PPE usage for tasks being performed.

5. Employee demonstrates consistent Hand Hygiene practices.

Minimum completion of 6 hours each in college level chemistry and biology.

Travel between Hamilton and Main campuses.

Familiarity with various information systems.

Receive, process and pack tissue and fluid samples at Hamilton campus for delivery to the main campus.

Assist with collection of fine needle aspiration samples under pathologist guidance.

Maintain equipment and stain maintenance records in the pathology laboratory.

Maintain patient records in the form of glass slides, reports and quality documents.
