Priest Chaplain

**Job Description:**

The Priest Chaplain is an ordained Roman Catholic priest with faculties granted by the local Bishop, serving as a vital member of the Spiritual Care Department. Provides sacramental ministry—including Mass, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, and Eucharist- to Catholic patients and families, while also offering spiritual and emotional support to staff and individuals of all faiths. The Priest Chaplain leads liturgical and paraliturgical services, maintains sacramental records per Canon Law and hospital policy, and ensures the proper care of sacred spaces. Participates in interdisciplinary care, crisis response, and ethical consultations, supports end-of-life planning, and contributes to staff education, professional development, and research, all in alignment with the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Services.

**Essential Functions:**

+ Provides Catholic sacraments and rituals including Mass, Anointing of the Sick, Reconciliation, and Eucharist distribution, and ensures proper use and maintenance of chapel and sacred spaces.

+ Prepares and delivers homilies aligned with liturgical guidelines and patient needs, and coordinates paraliturgical services such as blessings, prayer services, and seasonal celebrations.

+ Maintains sacramental records and tracks data for sacraments performed on-site, including baptisms, confirmations, and marriages, in accordance with Canon Law and hospital policy.

+ Demonstrates knowledge of and adherence to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Services, and educates patients, families, and staff as appropriate.

+ Provides spiritual care and emotional support to patients, families, caregivers, and staff during times of illness, trauma, grief, and stress, regardless of religious affiliation.

+ Develops, implements, and documents spiritual assessments, interventions, and outcomes, and participates in interdisciplinary rounds, care conferences, and ethics consultations.

+ Responds to crisis situations and urgent spiritual care needs, including trauma, death, and emergency alerts, and participates in on-call and holiday coverage as needed.

+ Assists patients and families with advance directives, end-of-life planning, and resources for bereavement, transition, and loss.

+ Supports departmental goals through participation in meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and adherence to hospital policies and procedures.

+ Engages in professional development, precepts chaplain interns or trainees, contributes to education and committee work, and conducts or participates in IRB-approved research in collaboration with spiritual care/mission leadership.

**Physical Requirements:**

**Required Qualifications**

+ Ordination to the Catholic Priesthood

+ Bachelor's Degree (accredited)

+ Completion of Accredited Graduate Theological Degree

+ Endorsement stating good standing with the local diocese or archdiocese required. Letter of Recommendation of suitability by senior administrative leader of parish, region, conference, or diocese.

+ 4 units of Accredited Clinical Pastoral Education completed.

+ Board Certification as a chaplain by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, the Association of Professional Chaplains, BCCi, or affiliated cognate group

+ Three or more years of experience as a Priest Chaplain in a hospital setting.

**Physical Requirements**

+ Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, documents, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs.

+ Frequent interactions with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.

+ Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate supplies and equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use for typing, accessing needed information, etc.

+ For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.

$30.55 - $48.12
