JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Grain Production Lab in the Department of Plant Science at Penn State is seeking a part-time research assistant who is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Plant Sciences, Agricultural Science or a related field.

The candidate will assist in conducting field and laboratory research on soybean, corn, and other grain crops.

Typical duties include:

+ establishing field plots

+ collecting and processing plant and soil samples

+ monitoring soil moisture sensors

+ performing laboratorial analysis on plant and soil samples.

The candidate may also be asked to assist with general organizational tasks related to setting up a new laboratory in the Agricultural Sciences and Industries Building.

The successful candidate must be willing to travel to field research sites (including commercial farms), and be able to work outdoors during the day, be detail oriented, and work well independently.

The successful candidate will report to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Daniela Carrijo) and will often work with other researchers and summer interns.

Preference will be given to:

+ Candidates near completion of their undergraduate studies and who have an interest in either continuing their education into graduate school or moving on to a research career in the agricultural sciences

+ Candidates who have a flexible schedule that allows for occasional long days of field work in commercial farms outside of State College area

+ Candidates with a positive attitude and passionate about agricultural research

This job requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid US driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
