The RN assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the care of all assigned psychiatric patients. The RN coordinates, directs and participates as an effective interdisciplinary team member. + Regular, consistent, on-site, and timely attendance.


+ Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending education workshops; reviews professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

+ Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; making or recommending necessary adjustments; following system/hospital and nursing division's philosophies and standards of care set by state board of nursing, state nurse practice act, and other governing agency regulations.

+ Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.

+ Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records.

+ Maintains continuity among nursing teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs using Nurse Knowledge Exchange techniques.

+ Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.


+ Identifies patient care requirements by establishing personal rapport with potential and actual patients, and other persons in a position to understand care requirements.

+ Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families.

+ Promotes patient's independence by establishing patient care goals; teaching patient/family to understand condition, medications, and self-care skills; answering questions.

+ Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.

+ Maintains nursing supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies; using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.

Specialty Essential Functions:

+ Ensures that assessment of the patient and the direct and indirect patient care delivered is in accordance with the PA Nurse Practice Act, hospital policies, procedures and protocols and other professional standards of care.

+ Process psychiatric emergencies as assigned, through assessment of patients' condition and collaboration with psychiatrist to effect a crisis resolution, process commitments and refer patients to appropriate treatment facilities.

+ Provides for patient safety in compliance with hospital and nursing department policies.

+ Orchestrates management of agitated patients by other staff members (handling, restraining, secluding).

+ Demonstrates ability to assess escalating behavior of patient and take action.

+ Updates crisis intervention skills on a yearly basis.

+ Assures that patient belongings have been searched for potentially harmful items.

+ Demonstrates a working knowledge of psychotropic medications.

+ Maintains department protocols for identified psychiatric medications.

+ Administers, monitors and documents efficacy, side effects and patient compliance.

+ Provides patient/family education for prescribed medications.

+ Conducts group therapy including medication groups, support groups and educational groups for patients, as well as serves as an information/referral source for families in these areas.

+ Acts as a facilitator of group sessions.

+ Provides patients with individualized educational materials.

+ Demonstrates charge nurse leadership by complying with unit policies and expectations.

+ Utilize unit based report format (daily report book, admission section of cardex).

+ Regulate/authorize overtime.

+ Demonstrates organizational skills for unit continuity and consistence. .

+ Begin report on time 6:42, 2:42, 10:42

+ Tape report in allotted 25 minute segments, allowing for new admission time.

+ Schedule/discontinue shift personnel in compliance with staffing grid.

+ Complete daily shift census breakdown.

+ Delegate unit assignments in accordance with acuity/staffing grid.

+ Complete or assign treatment plans and treatment plan updates.

+ Complete or assign daily shift cleanup as needed.

+ Coordinates off-unit outside activities as a daily expectation on weather permitting days.

+ Coordination of staffing resources.

+ Compliance with off unit policy.

+ Assists staff with admissions (assessments) in ER or outpatient.

+ Availability as a resource for procedures and protocols.

+ Assist with med reconciliation for admissions and discharges.

Marginal Functions: Defined as duties that are not essential in nature and do not take a considerable amount of time to complete (less than 10%).

+ Performs other duties as required.

Required Skills and Knowledge: Minimum level of education, skills and abilities necessary in performing the job.

+ Education:

+ Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program

+ Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN)

+ Professional Licensing Certification and education requirements.

+ Certification / Licensure / Regulation:

+ Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Pennsylvania

+ Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program.

+ Workplace Violence Prevention (transfer into department must obtain within 30 days)

+ Act 33 with renewal

+ Act 34 with renewal

+ Act 73 FBI Clearances

+ Prior Experience: None

Other Skills and Abilities:

+ Strong time management and organizational skills; ability to work independently and in a team setting; creativity in treatment in various settings including inpatient, skilled nursing and outpatient clinics; ability to transition smoothly between various treatment settings; flexibility in scheduling.

+ A Nursing refresher course may be required if employee has not worked in an acute care setting for his / her most recent three consecutive years of professional employment.

Preferred Factor:

+ These are job related enhancements that are preferred or would benefit the performance outcome of the job but are not essential or required for the job to exist.

+ One-two years’ experience preferred
