TheSr. Engineering Managerfor Access Instrumentation (AI) RD (New Product Development) plays a key role in strategically aligning, planning and executing Medtronic, Advanced Surgical Instruments group, pipeline of AI NPD efforts. The position is responsible for managing a AI RD team of engineers and technicians in ensuring timely completion of new product initiatives from Concept through Commercialization, while working alongside our Tech Dev team for future product ideas.
Manage Access and Instrumentation RD Development project(s) chartered to the North Haven, CT site. Oversee RD efforts and ensure achievement of product development deliverables against project plans.
Organize and manage departmental development activities across responsible projects and in accordance with design controls, risk management and SOPs.
Identify and manage documentation needs as required by various regulatory bodies.
Interact with RD and cross functional partners (marketing, regulatory, clinical, quality, etc.) to create a cohesive environment for product development success.
Perform technology scouting for novel or adjacent technologies.
Perform/oversee clinical and preclinical assessments.
Contribute inventions, new designs and techniques regarded as advances in the medical and technical/scientific community.
Prepares reports, presentations and spreadsheets of an analytical and interpretative nature to be presented at multiple internal and external venues.
Uses advanced techniques to anticipate, identify and provide technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems.
Manage and mentor the Team of RD technical staff. Set goals and actively track progress. Manage resource, expense, and capital budgets
Attracts, develops and retains a high-performance technical staff.
Provides direction and guidance to technical staff and/or supervisory staff who exercise significant latitude and independence in their assignments.
Coach, motivate and foster professional development of direct reports.
Ensures that RD cross-functional team representatives are highly capable and strong contributors to the team.
Organizes the coordination of activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure timely delivery.
**A Day in the Life**
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
+ Plans, directs and implements all aspects of the companys design and development of new medical device products or software systems.
+ May develop, evaluate, implement and maintain technical quality assurance and control systems or reliability systems and standards pertaining to materials, techniques, or company products.
+ Oversees the investigation and evaluation of existing technologies.
+ Guides the conceptualization of new methodologies, materials, machines, processes or products.
+ Directs the development of new concepts from initial design to market release.
+ Manages feasibility studies of the design to determine if capable of functioning as intended.
+ Monitors documentation maintenance throughout all phases of research and development.
+ Organizes the coordination of activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure timely delivery.
+ Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.
**Must Have: Minimum Requirements**
+ Bachelors degree required
+ Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience with 5+ years of managerial experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with 5+ years of managerial experience
**Nice to Have**
Experience within a new product development group which includesmanagerial Medical Deviceexperience; Medical Device product development projects preferred
BS Engineering or Scientific discipline.
**PEOPLE MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONAL CAREER STREAM:**

Decisions impact projects or operations, affect the deadlines, resources, and funds, and the achievement of organizational objectives. Typically has budget or PL accountability for a team, projects and function.

Problems and issues faced are complex, difficult and undefined, and require detailed information gathering, analysis and investigation to understand the problem.
Communication and Influence: Communicates with internal and external customers and vendors concerning ongoing operations, programs or processes. Leadership and Talent Management: Manages at least one (department, function, geography typically comprised of other People or Program managers and / or supervisors and experienced professionals. Knowledge and Experience: Requires broad management knowledge to lead project teams in one department. Typically has mastery level knowledge and skills within a specific technical or professional discipline with broad understanding of other areas within the job function.
