**PrincipalResearch Development Engineer**

Medtronics Surgical Solutions RD team is seeking a PrincipalRD Engineer to be responsible for supporting the design and development of products for the Surgical Supplies RD organization from concept to commercialization. The ideal candidate has a strong background in the development of surgical products/devices. This person will be expected to generate solutions that are imaginative, thorough, practical, and consistent with organizational objectives.
**What is the work you will be doing?**
Work with a multidisciplinary team to design and develop innovative healthcare solutions from concept through commercialization.
Be creative and apply solid mechanical engineering design skills while following design controls to develop new medical devices.
Develop and maintain CAD models, assemblies, and Bill of Materials utilizing Creo and Windchill.
Creating detailed component and assembly drawings utilizing GDT.
Work with outside suppliers on material selection and specifications for components, subassemblies, and finished assemblies.
Adhere to MBD DRM objectives
Performing analytical modeling / analysis in support of meeting design requirements.
Creates and evaluates prototypes to generate concept and model approvals.
Interacts with contract services (design and manufacturing), materials suppliers, participates in DFM and DFA processes to access component and assembly manufacturability.
Participating in FMEAs (Design Process), Usability Analyses, and follows up on generated recommendations.
Participate and support pre-clinical labs, observe cases in hospitals and interact with customers.
Exercises considerable latitude in determining deliverables of assignments, with limited oversight from manager.
Coaches, reviews, and delegates work to lower level engineers.
Presenting information and communicate effectively with the cross functional core team.
Generating and documenting intellectual property while working with the Legal Department.
Researching and integrating new technologies and processes.
Adhering to all Medtronic safety policies and procedures.
**A Day in the Life**
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
+ Designs, develops, analyzes, troubleshoots and provides technical skills during research and/or product development.
+ Designs studies to investigate specific life science questions within field of expertise.
+ May be involved in product research and development and/or clinical trials.
+ Translates research discoveries into usable and marketable products.
**Must Have: Minimum Requirements**
+ Bachelors degree required
+ Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience
**Nice to Have**
Proficiency with 3D CAD software (Creo preferred). Ability to create parts and assemblies utilizing best practices.
Thorough understanding and application of drafting practices, GDT, ASME drawing standards.
Experienced in performing Tolerance Stack Analyses (Excel, CeTol 6, Monte Carlo simulations).
Knowledge of component measurement, testing and statistical analysis including statistical software (Minitab preferred).
Advanced knowledge of mechanical analysis utilizing hand calculations and FEA software (CREO Simulate and Mechanism, or ANSYS preferred).
Ability to design and build breadboards and working prototype models of devices using rapid prototyping resources (3D printing, SLA, CNC machining, and injection molding).
Solid understanding of DFM and DFA principles to create robust components and assemblies.
Well versed in component manufacturing processes (Plastic injection molding, Extrusion, Metal injection molding, Sheet metal stamping, Machining, Powdered metal)
Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
Ability to work independently or effectively collaborate with others as part of a team.
Discipline to adhere to schedules and tasks based on instructions/guidance from engineering leadership.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Outlook, Word, Power Point, and Excel
Basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology.
Experience with pre-clinical animal models
Experience working with electromechanical assemblies
Familiarity with PC Boards, DC motors, Flex Circuits, and electromechanical switches
Experience with Six Sigma (DFSS) or DRM
