JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Attention and Behavior Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry is seeking 2 experienced teachers to assist with our Summer Treatment Program (STP) for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The STP is an evidence-based treatment program for 7-11-year-old children with ADHD that is implemented in a summer day camp setting, including academic and art classrooms. The STP has strong research supporting its positive effects on the serious behavioral, social, and academic difficulties exhibited by children with ADHD. It is the only evidence-based, therapeutic summer setting designed specifically for children with ADHD in Central Pennsylvania. The average staff-to-camper ratio is 3:1. The Penn State STP is supported by the Philanthropic efforts of the Children’s Miracle Network which allows the families in greatest need to participate regardless of their income level. Over 90% of parents who enrolled their child in a previous Penn State STP rated the program as more effective than other services their children received.

Teachers will lead academic and/or art activities for 12 to 15 children with ADHD in classroom settings. Classrooms are designed to improve the classroom behaviors of students using behavioral and academic instructional techniques outlined in a program manual. Each classroom will be staffed with an additional aide and counselors are also available to assist in the classroom as needed. The STP uses as an established positive incentive program with each child’s counselor tracking their progress across the day, including in the classroom.

This opening is typically filled by individuals with teaching experience, ideally teaching elementary school-age students. This is a 20- to-30-hour per week opening (Monday-Thursday, typically from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.). Pay is $35 per hour with some flexibility in work hours. The work location is TBD, but will be near Hershey, PA.

Requirements and Qualifications

+ A bachelor's degree in education or a related field as well as relevant experience teaching academics or art is required.

+ Preference will be given to applicants with experience in behavior modification and special education settings as well as those with an interest in working with children with ADHD.

+ Employment with the University for this job will require successful completion of the Pennsylvania (PA) Publicly Available Clearances: PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and the FBI Criminal History Background Check.

Teachers will learn about the STP and set up their classrooms during the week of June 10, 2024, to June 14, 2024 (times and days flexible). The STP will run from June 17, 2024 through July 26, 2024, with June 19th and July 4th as unpaid holidays -- teachers must be available on all of these dates.
