Job Summary:

The Technician, Central Service performs a wide array of duties to provide sterile instrumentation, trays, and supplies to the Department of Surgery and other hospital departments. In addition, many vendor acquired supplies are dispensed through the Central Service Department.

TECHNICAL STANDARDS

Essential Functions: Defined as duties specific to the job, that, if removed, would change the entire purpose of the job; to include the Essential Physical Demands and Essential Working Conditions of this position.

I. Core Essential Functions:

  • Regular, consistent, on-site, and timely attendance.



II. Specialty Essential Functions:

  • Maintains disposable linen inventory
  • Handles package carefully to ensure package integrity
  • Assures adequate stock is maintained
  • Rotates stock according to department protocol
  • Maintains re-usable linen inventory
  • Assures adequate stock is maintained
  • Places increase/decrease orders to linen service via fax
  • Delivers requested linen items to OR
  • Cleans and assembles Emergency Crash Carts
  • Cleans exterior of carts
  • Transports locked cart to Pharmacy
  • Restocks according to list
  • Checks supplies for outdates
  • Issues cart when requested
  • Maintains pharmaceutical product inventory
  • Assures adequate supply is maintained
  • Places order via fax
  • Collects completed order from Pharmacy
  • Par stocks all areas of the hospital on a daily basis
  • Counts all par stock items
  • Replenishes supplies based on established par levels
  • Reorders adequate stock replacement for distribution area
  • Advises Lead CS Technician regarding discrepancies
  • Issues supplies/equipment to all areas of the hospital
  • Delivers clean/sterile equipment requested every two [2] hours
  • Delivers stat items as requested
  • Maintains level of IV pumps stocked in critical care areas-replenished at the end of each shift
  • Conducts soiled pick-up rounds throughout the hospital
  • Retrieves soiled/used equipment and instruments per established schedule [Minimum 4 times daily]
  • Picks-up used instrumentation from Dental Center [M-F]
  • Conducts Steris System I biological testing for all areas of the hospital on a weekly basis
  • Tests unit in Anesthesia work room
  • Tests unit in Operating Room
  • Tests two [2] units in Surgery Center
  • Tests unit in CPD
  • Completes and maintains records
  • Prepares loan/consign instruments.
  • Receives/documents items.
  • Inspects/decontaminated instruments.
  • Assembles appropriate instrumentation.
  • Sterilizes/delivers to OR/CSW for use.
  • Includes delivery of totes (implants) to and from user area.
  • Manually cleans case carts after use
  • Places cart on hydraulic lift (where applicable by location)
  • Cleans interior and exterior sections of cart with approved solution



IV. Marginal Functions: Defined as duties that are not essential in nature and do not take a considerable amount of time to complete (less than 10%).

  • Delivers additional trays and supplies to O.R.
  • Performs housekeeping functions - keeps area neat and organized
  • Retrieves soiled carts/instruments following the procedures from both SCW and OR
  • Uses proper etiquette when answering phones
  • Cleans sterilizer chambers and carts on weekends
  • Performs other duties as required



V. Required Skills and Knowledge: Minimum level of education, skills and abilities necessary in performing the job.

Education:

  • HS Diploma, GED or equivalent knowledge



Certification / Licensure / Regulation:

  • As of September 1, 2017 any new or transferred employee must currently hold or obtain within 18 months of employment one of the following certifications: Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or International Association for HealthCare Central Service Materials Management (IAHCSMM).
