Join the Tactical Space Systems Division Mission Systems Engineering organization in a strategic role within the Civil and Commercial Space (CCS) business area as a Sr. Staff Mission Systems Architect to support exciting space flight programs designed to further scientific, robotic, or human exploration in Low Earth Orbit and beyond at our Dulles, VA campus or our Gilbert, AZ campus. These roles are responsible for leading mission concept development, customer interfacing, and strategic roadmap creation and implementation.

As a Mission Systems Architect within the Tactical Space Systems Division, you will have the opportunity to support exciting programs such as the TESS program whose technology has already discovered over 20 exoplanets outside our solar system, the NASA Artemis mission that will be sending humans, including the first female, back to the lunar surface, or the MEV Spacecraft that is transforming infrastructure in space with the development and deployment of next gen robotics and mission extension capabilities. Our main business locations include, but are not limited to Dulles, VA, Gilbert, AZ and Redondo Beach, CA. There is flexibility on work locations near other NG locations.

The Systems Engineer provides technical solutions to a wide range of complex and difficult problems and contributes to the completion of specific programs and projects. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with business objectives. The Systems Engineer also provides strong leadership to multi-disciplined technical teams.


+ Provide support to all or selected segments for the SE Integrated Team in a leadership capacity

+ Support the development of space vehicle and/or ground segment design and analysis efforts

+ Conceive and develop solutions to complex analytical, design, and test problems

+ Technical management of major bus subcontracted program elements

+ Support and provide value-added feedback within contractual space segment technical reviews

+ Responsible to write monthly status and technical performance reviews and reports

+ Lead, plan, and manage mission utilization of complex space systems and capabilities, including mission system element design, capability assessment, mission threads, interfaces, verification/validation planning, and mission integration functions during system development.

+ Perform system-of-system trades, modeling, simulation, and analysis to assess space mission architecture alternatives for delivering a customer mission effect, data or capability as it fits within a broader campaign.

+ Perform analysis-of-alternatives and synthesizes mission elements to lead to a cohesive space mission solution. Space mission architecture trades may include orbits, launch vehicles, space vehicles, payloads, ground segment, mission planning, Concepts of Operations (CONOPS), Design Reference Missions (DRM), system security and external interfaces.

+ Perform system analysis, design optimization, system performance assessments, and operations analysis work in support of integrated mission analysis for current and potential customers.

+ Track and present Measures of Performance, Measures of Effectiveness and define other metrics to ensure capabilities meet customer needs and objectives.

+ Understand and communicate operational mission requirements to engineering teams, business executives, customers, suppliers, and teammate organizations.

**Basic Qualifications:**

+ Must be a US citizen and a Bachelor's Degree in STEM Science, Technology, Engineering, Math or related technical field and a minimum of 14 years of applicable experience, or a Master's Degree and 12 years of applicable experience

+ Experience in Low Earth Orbit or deep space, scientific, robotic, or human-rated architectures, planning, command and control, and operations

+ Experience communicating operational mission requirements and interfaces to space, payload and/or ground system engineering teams

+ Strong team leadership skills and communication skills

**Preferred Qualifications:**

+ Experience with space avionics and power systems

+ Experience with electrostatics and magnetic fields associated with the Earth’s upper atmosphere

+ CONOPS development for Space Missions involving end-to-end mission data threads

+ Prior experience conducting system analysis, design optimization, and or system performance assessments involving Command and Data Handling, power distribution systems, structures and mechanisms, thermal control, RF communications, or attitude determination and control systems

+ Proficient in the use of the requirement development and management tool DOORS

+ Experience in development and maintenance of interface control documents

+ Experience in avionics system testing and evaluation

+ Knowledge in any of the following areas: Launch Vehicles, System Safety, System Reliability, Contamination Control, EMI, Space Environments (Radiation, Surface Charging, etc.), or Human Factors

Salary Range: $173,300.00 - $259,900.00

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
