Clinical Specialist - Information Technology - Pharmacy - Orlando

Facility Profile:
Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,107-bed Florida Hospital Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. Florida Hospital Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. We are already one of the busiest hospitals in the nation, providing service excellence to more than 32,000 inpatients and 125,000 outpatients each year.

Department Profile:
The Pharmacy Department is open 24 hours a day and is staffed with approximately 130 employees, including pharmacists, technicians, a medication safety coordinator, inventory control specialists, and an administrative coordinator. The entire pharmacy team works together to assure patients receive the highest quality pharmaceutical care possible. From our central pharmacy and 6 satellite pharmacy locations, we dispense 15,000 doses of medication daily. Through Cerner Millennium CPOE and Pharmacy management system, the Pharmacy processes more than 10,000 orders per day. Pyxis dispensing cabinets help distributes 90% of the medications for administration. The Pharmacy department manages a $55-million-dollar drug budget. Lexicomp serves as the system drug information reference

Work Hours/Shifts:
Mon - Fri / every 4th weekend

Job Summary:
Clinical Specialists are responsible for coordinating and providing clinical pharmacy services for patients receiving treatment within his/her assigned specialty area. Supports the creation and maintenance of medication use related policies and procedures. Serves as a member of administrative committees related to the care of patients within their assigned specialty area. Integrates clinical services and educational activities as required. Actively provides clinical preceptorship for pharmacy residents, students and staff members as required. Serves the needs of neonatal, adolescent and geriatric patients; specific age groups as identified in the position responsibilities. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:
  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree, or equivalent experience
  • Four (4) years clinical operations experience in Pharmacy or completion of an ASHP residency program.
  • Ability to work well independently and set priorities
  • Ability to coordinate and lead groups of people in determining policy, implementing procedures and demonstrating progress
  • Initiative to keep abreast of new information, products, and/or developments in the field of pharmacy informatics
  • Initiative to keep abreast of developments in the provision of pharmacy services
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Supervisory skills
  • Working knowledge of the Cerner Information System (Preferred)

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:
  • Current registration with Florida State Board of Pharmacy as a registered pharmacist

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership in evaluating and prioritizing the development of technology, recommending enhancements to present to I-extend, and designing and creating new functions to achieve pharmacy information, automation, and patient safety initiatives.
  • Provides and creates computer generated documents and reports; assists in developing and implementing clinical pathways; and identifies potential enhancements for clinical applications.
  • Helps to maintain and update price files/bar code information, including CDM and NDC information.
  • Develops short and long range priorities, acting as the liaison to I-extend system as appropriate for current and planned IT projects.
  • Prepares and maintains materials that provide communication and information to the clinical staff relating to Cerner implementation, functionality, maintenance and upgrades.
  • Evaluates programs and ensures legal standards are met.
  • Coordinates support and learning between clinical users and the I-extend team.
  • Provides instructional courses for new hires and develops user standards of practice.
  • Administers the day to day performance of the pharmacy information and automation systems as they support Pharmacy department operations.
