Job Summary
Non-bedside health care professional who provides poison information to individuals and health care providers by phone. Obtains patient history, assesses severity of toxicity, and offers treatment recommendations. Onsite training provided and telecommuter option available after passing the national certification examination for poison specialists.

Essential Functions
•    Provides poison information on patients of all ages, including infants, children, adolescents, adults, and seniors.
•    Obtains patient history, including patient condition, substance(s) involved, circumstances, etc., in a timely manner consistent with the severity of the exposure.
•    Uses computerized databases, textbooks, medical literature, consultants, and previous knowledge and experience to accurately assess each exposure case.
•    Formulates and implements an appropriate plan of care (patient disposition) in a timely manner based on evidence based guidelines, case specifics, patient care priorities, health care facility resources, and professional judgment.
•    Communicates patient information and treatment recommendations to individuals and health care facilities/providers.
•    Follows up on patients to evaluate progress and offer additional treatment recommendations, when needed.
•    Provides initial crisis intervention to callers with other medical or drug problems or suicidal intentions, with referral to appropriate community agencies.
•    Participates in ongoing accredited training in toxicology.
Physical Requirements
Works in the Carolinas Poison Center, a 24-hour emergency call center. Requires ability to sit for long periods of time while utilizing a telephonic headset and computer. Must be able to maneuver through several software programs and have good finger dexterity and intact senses of hearing, sight, and touch. Must speak English in clear, understandable terms. Requires sharp critical thinking skills, the ability to concentrate in a fast-paced environment with numerous interruptions, and the ability to respond quickly to changes in patient and call center conditions. 

Education, Experience and Certifications
A pharmacist, RN, PhD in a scientific field, MD, DO, or other health related professional. Pharmacists and RNs must be licensed or eligible for licensure in NC. Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS HCP) from AHA required. Must obtain certification by the American Association of Poison Control Centers within 2 examination periods of initial eligibility. Training for examination is provided.
