Laborer - Streets Division (Temp/Seasonal)

Job Description

Job Summary The City of Asheville is currently looking to hire a Full-Time, Temp/Seasonal Laborer position working within the Streets Division of the Public Works Department. The purpose of this position is to perform as a skilled or unskilled laborer on a construction crew, maintenance crew or custodial crew.

Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday 7:00 AM -5:30 PM 
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Operates power an assortment of tools used in construction and/or maintenance activities.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment and fuels vehicles. Inspects equipment daily and reports need for repairs and assists in repair work.
  • Operates equipment to dispense and spread asphalt to patch potholes. Operates tampers, rollers and pavers in maintenance and construction of streets. Prepares road and ditch surfaces for repair; shovels and tamps tar and asphalt to patch and repair streets.
  • Locates, unearths, repairs, rebuilds or replaces water mains and meters, valves, and valve boxes. Opens and flushes hydrants.
  • Participates in building curbs, gutters, catch basins and manholes; pours and forms concrete.
  • Assists in laying pipe by operating power saws and cleaning pipe of debris and excess dirt.
  • Operates lawn mowers and string trimmers to cut and trim lawns and other grassed areas; pulls weeds from flower beds and other landscaped areas; and, sprays herbicides and pesticides. Mows and drags athletic fields and applies lime to mark boundaries.
  • Provides routine custodial services.
  • Assembles and erects playground equipment. Maintains soccer field and City pool.
  • Positions signs, marking cones and flags to identify work areas.
  • Operates and/or trains use of heavy motorized equipment, including bulldozers, compactors, front end loaders, graders, motorized pans, farm tractors, track backhoes and packers.
  • Picks up debris and refuse.
  • Loads and unloads material on and off of trucks.
  • Maintains activity logs.
  • Provides event support setting up tables, chairs and/or tents.
  • Provides weather related maintenance.
Supplemental Functions:
  • Performs other similar duties as required.

Required Education & Experience Education/Experience:
  • Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, simple processes and the routine operation of machines
Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid Driver's License required.

  • General knowledge of learned procedures, practices, routines to deal effectively with routine work.
  • Ability to read and understand basic workplace data, such as simple forms, tables, graphs, schedules, etc.
