Basic Function

The Commercial Portfolio Manager provides credit oversight assistance to Relationship Managers in the management of credit risk in assigned market(s) or regional commercial loan portfolio. This includes but is not limited to portfolio risk management support to ensure timely renewals, annual reviews, as well as assist in completion of action plans per the bank's policy.

This position will be tasked to partner with the Commercial Relationship Manager and Commercial Banking Associate to facilitate the gathering of financial statements and completion of covenant testing, if applicable as well as monitoring of the risk ratings within an RM's portfolio.

The Portfolio Manager is charged with the analysis and underwriting of renewals and annual reviews for complex credit facilities (CRE and C&I). This position will report to the VP/Senior Portfolio Manager and will have a strong working relationship with Credit Administration with regards to portfolio risk management, annual review and covenant tracking with credits generally greater than $500,000.00 (depending on complexity).

High level customer service support, recognition and advisory cross-selling efforts with the RM along with performing special projects are expected.

General Qualifications

Education: Four-year college degree from an accredited institution in a business related field such as finance, accounting, business administration, or economics is preferred. Successful completion of a formalized credit training program (e.g. RMA, Omega) is preferred.

Experience: Five years of experience in Loan Review, Credit Analysis, Commercial Relationship Management, or Commercial Loan Operations.

Skills: Excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills. Highly organized and has the ability to prioritize assignments to meet deadlines. Good presentation skills and analytical by nature with sound business judgement. Successful candidate is detail oriented and able to complete assigned tasks with a sense of urgency and high degree of accuracy. Candidate has the ability to identify and recommend potential cross-sell opportunities. Experience with Microsoft Windows Operating System, and satisfactory knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word, and Outlook is required. Additional knowledge with STAR Reports, S&P and Moody's Ratings is a plus. Familiarity with all federal and state banking regulations pertaining to lending and consumer compliance, including fair lending laws.

Scope of Decisions and Authority

This position requires keeping complete confidentiality of all customer transactions and information, and paying close attention to security within and around the bank's premises at all times.


  • Portfolio Manager will be responsible for the completion of all renewals and annual reviews for an assigned market.
  • Partners with Commercial Relationship Manager in meeting with current clients, when applicable, to better understand the credit risk and the customer's business and needs.
  • Partners with Commercial Relationship Manager and Commercial Banking Associate to ensure required financial statements are collected in a timely manner to properly complete renewals and annual reviews.
  • Assists in the structure and pricing of loans with the Commercial Relationship Managers.
  • Oversight of loan process with follow-up on appraisal and underwriting conditions through closing.
  • Regularly provides updates to the borrower and Relationship Manager and Commercial Banking Associate team.
  • Partnership with the Commercial Credit Manager and analyst team to efficiently and effectively manage the larger complex renewals in a timely manner based on 1) Familiarity of credit with an existing credit analyst and 2) Current workload/backlog at the PM or credit analyst level adversely impacting client response time
  • Evaluates pertinent information to determine risk rating and whether an existing credit is an acceptable risk.
  • Where risk rating changes warrant transition to Special Assets, Portfolio Manager will be responsible for the preparation of necessary documentation.
  • On annual reviews and renewals, Portfolio Manager will be accountable for complete analysis of borrower's financial condition, profitability, repayment ability, operating trends and stress testing/projections.
  • Portfolio Manager will also be responsible for covenant testing on an ongoing basis. Where a technical default occurs, the Relationship Manager/Portfolio Manager will be required to originate and execute agreed upon action plan as approved by Credit Administration.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external clients.
  • Cross sell Bank products when opportunity arises, or refer to a Bank Specialist when appropriate.
  • Keep up to date on Bank Policies, Laws and Regulations that govern commercial lending.
  • Completes, passes and maintains an up to date status for all positional and company required compliance and regulatory courses by assigned due date(s).
  • Participates in special projects and assignments and performs other duties as assigned.
