Job Summary The City of Asheville's Parks and Recreation Department is excited to hire a part-time Program Leader/Lead Teacher to assist in the program operation and maintenance of the Vance After School Program.  The position carries out recreation programs and activities, schedules, supervises, leads and participates in youth activities.  Work is performed under the general supervision of a Program Manager or Facility Manager.

 Work Schedule:  Monday through Friday 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm (20 hours per week)
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides organization assistance in providing a diverse collection of recreation programs.
  • Provides face-to-face leadership and skill instruction when necessary.
  • Plans, leads and supervises youth in licensed after-school activities. 
  • Prepares facility for activities; opens and closes facility locking and unlocking doors/gates, windows, and turning lights on and off.
  • Supervises youth participants in indoor and outdoor activities, enforcing recreation facility rules and regulations.
  • Prepares and maintains records on attendance and participation, collecting and processing applicable fees.
  • Plans activities.
  • Participates in recreational activities.
  • Drives City vehicles for the activity groups.
  • Attends regular staff meetings to discuss new programs and problems.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Required Education & Experience Education/Experience:
  • According to the Preservice Requirements for Lead Teachers without a NCECC (Child Care Rule .0710):
    • All teachers must have a High School diploma or equivalent and have one of the following:
      • One year experience in a licensed child care center or two years experience as a licensed family child care home operator.
      • Successful completion of a two-year high school program of Child Care Services Occupational Home Economics.
      • Twenty hours of training in child development taken in the first six months of employment. 
Current CPR/First Aid Certification required. Current NC Driver's License or the ability to obtain one.

  • Ability to read, summarize and/or compare general workplace data and graphics, such as flow charts, maps, tables, etc.

  • Ability to research program documents and narrative materials, and develop reports from information gathered.
