Job Summary The City of Asheville is excited to hire a Labor Crew Leader within the Public Works Department, Streets Division. The purpose of this position is to supervise the labor performance for Public Works and grounds maintenance projects for the City. 

Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM (40 hours per week)
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversees activities and assists crews of labor involved in City Public Works, maintenance and ground maintenance projects; trains crew members; ensures adherence to proper procedures and safety precautions.
  • Plans and sets up facilities for upcoming events and functions.
  • Operates and maintains forklifts and other maintenance equipment.
  • Performs regular maintenance duties.
  • Makes repairs to facility and equipment.
  • Coordinates and leads team meetings.
  • Evaluates potential jobs to determine necessary labor, tools and time necessary for completion.
  • Oversees routine preventative maintenance on equipment.
Supplemental Functions:
  • Performs other similar duties as required.

Required Education & Experience Education/Experience:
  • Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature that may be obtained with six-months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency, with one (1)  to three (3) years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Working Conditions Knowledge:
  • Advanced knowledge of procedures and practices to analyze and resolve unusual or difficult problems.
  • Ability to read, summarize and/or compare general workplace data and graphics, such as flow charts, maps, tables, etc.
  • Ability to operate mowers, weed eaters, leaf blowers, snow blowers and  pressure washers.
  • Ability to conduct research of existing, internal policies and procedures
  • Ability to share information with direct supervisor or coworkers; no formal report compiled.
  • Ability to think creatively for work practices, programs and policies and is preferred for managing obstacles.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written form.
  • Ability to analyze situations to pinpoint problems and assist with solving problems or identifying sources of obstacles.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships as required by work assignments.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret policy and procedural guidelines and to apply this understanding to tasks.
  • Ability to bring resources together to resolve a problem or provide a solution.
Working Conditions:
  • This position requires heavy physical activity/prolonged walking and exposes employee to many different weather conditions. 
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs repeatedly.
