Job Description

Job Summary The City of Asheville is currently looking for a full-time HVAC/Refrigeration Building Maintenance Technician. The purpose of this position is to maintain and repair City facilities, specifically the U.S.  Cellular Center. Performs routine and special tasks to ensure the safety and well being of building occupants. Troubleshoots and repairs all areas of the building including the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems. 

Full-Time, Non-Exempt Positions, 40 hours per week
Work Schedule: Hours may vary depending on events

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Installs, performs preventative maintenance and troubleshoots all HVAC, electrical and plumbing failures. Repairs roof leaks and drainage issues. Evaluates the need for repair or replacement systems and devices.
  • Preforms preventative maintenance, repairs and troubleshoots all refrigeration equipment, Freezer units, venting fans and similar restaurant grade equipment throughout the facility.  Evaluates the need for repair or replacement of fixtures and devices. 
  • Evaluates and researches technical data to determine the cause and necessity of repairs. Interprets plumbing and electrical diagrams. Tests and traces circuits and wiring.
  • Reviews plans for construction at water production facilities. Repairs pumps and pressure reducing valves. Monitors pumps and tanks within the distribution system.
  • Provides preventive maintenance of emergency generators. Routinely starts and visually checks back-up generators to ensure readiness in the event of an emergency.
  • Installs and programs sophisticated electrical and digital control systems. Operates and uses computers for daily performance of skilled trade duties.
  • Sets up events, handles vendors and makes sure promoters have what they need. Turns on and monitors air conditioning or heating depending on events and buildings used.
  • Answers and evaluates customer and employee complaints to determine necessary repairs or services needed to correct the situation. Performs customer relation's duties by handling issues promptly and courteously.
  • Operates trucks, construction equipment, power tools and various maintenance devices.
  • Processes work orders and purchases parts and materials.
  • Performs locksmith duties.
  • Trains subordinates in skills to assist and complete various installations and repairs.
Supplemental Functions:
  • Performs other similar duties as required.

Required Education & Experience Education/Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalency with one (1) to three (3) years of related building repair and maintenance experience, working on large scale, complex projects; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire.
