Job Summary The City of Asheville's Parks & Recreation Department is seeking to fill a full-time Equipment Operator position within the Parks Maintenance Division. The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled work in the operation of a variety of heavy motorized equipment and perform mowing, trimming and grounds maintenance of City Owned Properties.

Full Time; Non-Exempt; 40 Hrs Per Week
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM; Ability to work overtime as needed for weekend ball field operations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs athletic field maintenance including daily lining, grooming, weed removal, and mound builds.
  • Performs mowing, trimming and grounds maintenance of City Owned Properties.
  • Operates a variety of heavy motorized equipment involved in the construction and maintenance of City grounds, facilities and infrastructure, including, but not limited to, heavy trucks, front end loaders, compactors, bulldozers, scrapers, motorized pan, tampers, rollers, etc.
  • Transports equipment from location to location.
  • Drives trucks along specified routes to collect and transport refuse.
  • Performs rough and fine grading, hole filling, demolitions and loading dirt and debris using skid steer with backhoe.
  • Facilitates tree maintenance and removal as a ground operations specialist using aerial lift truck, chainsaws, chippers, skid steer loaders and/or knuckle boom loaders to process debris.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment, such as checking and filling fluid levels and greasing as necessary.
  • Inspects equipment daily and reports need for repairs; assists in repair work.
  • Trains less-experienced Motor Equipment Operators in operation of various types of equipment as workload and time permit.
  • Performs a variety of manual or semi-skilled labor in conjunction with maintenance and construction projects.
  • Performs related work as required.

Required Education & Experience Education/Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalency, with some relevant experience with operating motorized equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.  
  • Experience in maintaining and mowing athletic ball fields preferred.
Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License or out of state driver's license with the ability to obtain the same.
  • Possession of Class "B" CDL or ability to obtain one within six (6) months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Working Conditions
  • Considerable knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of motorized equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and the proper safety precautions involved in operating heavy equipment.
  • Skill in the use of multiple types of motorized heavy equipment such as a skid steer, bulldozer, backhoe, trackhoe, mini excavator, and sweeper.
  • Ability to operate ball field grooming equipment for ball field maintenance and repair operations.
  • Ability to operate a closed cab utility tractor and maneuver around obstructions on narrow, curved streets.
  • Ability to use a variety of power and hand tools.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and operating adjustments to assigned equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral instructions.
  • Ability to instruct less experienced personnel in operation of heavy motorized equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively under arduous or unpleasant working conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessary by work assignments.
  • Ability to read and understand basic workplace data, such as simple forms, tables, graphs, schedules, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written form.
  • Ability to analyze situations to pinpoint problems and assist with solving problems or identifying sources of obstacles.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships as required by work assignments.
