Job Summary The City of Asheville is looking for Laborers (Landscaping and Mowing) within the Parks and Recreation Department. The purpose of this position is to perform as a skilled or unskilled laborer on a landscape or mowing crew.

Ideal Start Date: March 26, 2018
Work Schedule: 2 Shifts available: Monday to Friday 7 am to 3:30 pm or Monday to Thursday 7 am to 5:30 pm.

This position is a temporary/seasonal position. This position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor participation in the retirement system.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Operates power an assortment of tools, hand and power, used in landscaping and mowing activities.
  • Operates Z Trak mowers and string trimmers to cut and trim lawns and other grassed areas; pulls weeds from flower beds and other landscaped areas. Mows and drags athletic fields and applies lime to mark boundaries.
  • Picks up debris and refuse.
  • Loads and unloads material on and off of trucks.
  • Maintains activity logs.
  • Provides weather related maintenance.
Supplemental Functions:
  • Performs other similar duties as required.

Required Education & Experience Education & Experience:
  • Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines; level of knowledge is equivalent to less than high school or equivalency; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Possession of an active driver's license required.

  • Skilled in providing excellent customer service.
  • Skilled in the operation of a variety of landscaping and mowing motorized equipment.
  • Attention to detail while performing daily field grooming and maintenance of grooming equipment.
  • Capable of working outside in all types of weather, for prolonged periods of time and in dusty conditions.
  • Basic knowledge of record keeping and daily activity logs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Suited to working independently and with limited supervision.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of basic hand tools and small power tools.
