Job Summary
Assists the registered pharmacists in the preparation and distribution of drugs. Performs IV preparation, chemotherapy, auditing, ordering, and using the automated dispensing machines.

Essential Functions
  • Handles telephones and window information requests and distributes messages as necessary.
  • Provides information regarding pending orders, medication shortages and any items requiring future action.
  • Processes charges and credits for medications and adjusts patient bill as needed. Processes and maintains the inbound charge error report, the 10/1000 report and the Unpriced Orders report.
  • Uses, maintains, and troubleshoots departmental equipment and automated dispensing problems. Cleans and calibrates equipment as needed.
  • Monitors for drug shortages and problems, inventories medications and supplies, assesses inventory par levels, assembles and sends wholesaler orders and verifies orders.
  • Performs and documents nursing and pharmacy unit inspections. Manages medications at nursing units, processes discharge procedures and transfers patient medications, stocks medication replacement units, floor requests and automated dispensing machines, and removes dated medications.
  • Compounds individual extemporaneous formulations or bulk medication batches, repackages medications, records manufacturer lot numbers and expirations for compounding, and measures liquid aliquots with oral dosage units.
  • Attaches ancillary labeling to medications requiring special instructions.
  • Troubleshoots problems relating to drug distribution.
  • Demonstrates proficiency using the narcotic vault, filling emergency boxes and kits.
  • Assists in training other colleagues and students.
Physical Requirements
Works primarily in the pharmacy and delivers medications to nursing units. Requires considerable walking, standing, pushing mobile cart of 50 pounds maximum and lifting 25 pounds of material. May be required to frequently stretch, bend, twist, squat, or kneel to perform job. Works with potentially hazardous agents. Exposed to various conditions throughout the workday such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs and changes in temperature and humidity. Must be able to perform manipulative skills such as writing, typing, and data entry into the computer and automated dispensing machines. Must have use of both hands, be able to see clearly and read small type such as that on unit-dose medication packages and syringes. Must be able to speak and be understood by others. Must be able to hear normal sounds with moderate background noises.

Education, Experience and Certifications
High School Diploma or GED required. Certification from Pharmacy Technician Certification Board required. Prior hospital pharmacy experience required.1 year Retail Pharmacy experience is preferred.
