Salary: $10/hr

-Full Time/Long Term Position

-Monday through Friday

-Sewing camping materials such has sleeping bags and tents

Job Summary
  • Operate or tend sewing machines to join, reinforce, decorate, or perform related sewing operations in the assembly of garment or nongarment products.

Major Areas of Responsibility
  • Responsible for filling production orders in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for comparing kits to orders to ensure accuracy.
  • Responsible for the general maintenance of sewing machines.

Primary Objectives
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Meet production demands.

Specific Responsibilities of the Sewing Machine Operator
  • Monitor machine operation to detect problems such as defective stitching, breaks in thread, or machine malfunctions.
  • Positions items under needles, using marks on machines, clamps, templates, or cloth as guides.
  • Place spools of thread, cord, or other materials on spindles, insert bobbins, and thread ends through machine guides and components.
  • Match material pieces in correct sequences prior to sewing them, and verify that patterns match.
  • Guide products or product parts under machine needles and presser feet to sew parts together.
  • Start and operate or tend machines, such as single or double needle serging and flat bed felling machines, to automatically join, reinforce, or decorate material or articles.
  • Inspect products and markings on products to locate defects or damage, and mark errors as necessary.
  • Select supplies such as fasteners and thread, according to job requirements.
  • Mount attachments, such as needles, cutting blades, or pattern plates, and adjust machine guides according to specifications.
  • Cut excess thread and material from finished products.
  • Fold or stretch edges or lengths of items while sewing, in order to facilitate forming specified sections.
  • Perform equipment maintenance tasks such as replacing needles, or cleaning and oiling sewing machines.
  • Remove finished items from machines.
  • Examine and measure finished articles to verify conformance to standards, using rulers.
  • Turn knobs, screws, and dials to adjust settings of machines, according to product styles and equipment performance.
  • Position and mark patterns on materials to prepare for sewing.
  • Attach tape, trim, appliques, or elastic to specified products or product parts, according to item specifications.
  • Perform specialized or automatic sewing machine functions, such as buttonhole making or tacking.
  • Repair or alter items by adding replacement parts or missing stitches.
  • Attach buttons, hooks, zippers, fasteners, or other accessories to fabric, using sewing machine.
  • Baste edges of material to align and temporarily secure parts for final assembly.

Job Qualifications
  • Ability to take direction from others, operate autonomously and work well in a normal, assembly work environment.
  • Knowledge of fabrics, linings, and the ability to identify any potential fabric problems.
  • Knowledge of the usage of various sewing machines, tools and techniques.
  • Ability to do general maintenance on a sewing machine to keep it in good, working order.
  • Organized and can prioritize orders according to the needs of the Production Department.
  • Ability to do basic mathematical functions such as addition and subtraction.
  • Ability to perform good work practice and follow safety processes.
  • See colors, lines, shapes, etc. on fabric.
  • Able to identify and resolve problems efficiently; Gathers and analyzes information; Develops solutions; uses reason; read work order instructions.
  • Ability to listen and get clarification when necessary; Responds informatively to questions.

  • Experience in working with sewing machines.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools.

  • Standing -- approx. 15% of a normal shift/workday.

  • Use hands to finger, handle or feel -- approx. two thirds or more of a normal shift/workday.
  • Reach with hands and arms -- approx. two thirds or more of a normal shift/workday.
  • Talk or hear -- approx. one half or less of a normal shift/workday.
  • Finger dexterity required.
    • Hand coordination required.

Work Environment
  • Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and sharp objects.
  • Noise level ranges from quiet to moderate.
