Job Summary The City of Asheville invites you to apply to be a part of the 2018 Parks & Recreation department summer pool staff. An employee in this class is responsible for performing duties related to ensuring the safety and well-being of pool patrons, and aiding troubled swimmers in emergency situations.  Work includes performing life-saving services to swimmers in need; assisting with the maintenance of pools, equipment and facilities; assisting with conducting swimming programs; and enforcing rules and regulations pertaining to the protection of facilities, equipment and patrons.  Work is performed in accordance with established policies and regulations under general supervision of the Pool Manager and is evaluated through conferences in terms of the effectiveness and efficiency of programs and activities as well as public approval.

Hours Varies - some days, evenings, and weekends

This position is a temporary/seasonal position. This position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor participation in the retirement system.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Ensures that lifeguards are fully competent in performing water rescue procedures
  • Ensures patron safety at all times, observing the actions of all swimmers; enforcing water safety and pool rules; and aiding troubled swimmers with life-saving services using established techniques and procedures.
  • Assists with maintenance and inventory of pool equipment and facilities; vacuums and cleans pools, backwashes filter, tests and adjusts water chlorination, checks pool filtration and plumbing equipment, and makes minor repairs or calls for service.
  • Maintains discipline in pool and surrounding areas; assists in resolving patron disciplinary issues; documents patron disciplinary issues; submits prepared documentation to the Pool Manager.
  • Conducts swimming classes for patrons.
  • Participates in training programs to improve and/or maintain lifesaving skills.
  • Performs related work as required.

Required Education & Experience Minimum Requirements:
  • At least 16 years of age
  • Certified as a Red Cross Lifeguard
  • Certified in Red Cross CPR and First Aid
  • High School degree
  • 1+ years of experience as a lifeguard
Preferred Requirements:
  • Water Safety Instructor certification

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Working Conditions
  • Thorough knowledge of first-aid practices related to water sports and activities.
  • Thorough knowledge of proper life guarding techniques and methods.
  • General knowledge of community swimming pool operations including safety practices and procedures, and pool maintenance.
  • General knowledge of the City, departmental and divisional rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • General knowledge of the principles and techniques of recreation.
  • Considerable skill at and strength in swimming.
  • Ability to enforce safety rules and regulations, maintain discipline, and to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Ability to maintain good physical condition.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records.
  • Ability to perform water rescue functions.
  • Ability to perform some minor maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and activity participants.
