Overview of our Level IV Comprehensive Epilepsy Center

As a destination facility, the Florida Epilepsy Center works with a team of 30 sub-specialists to provide the most advanced treatments available, including clinical trials, and is equipped with a state-of-the-art, round-the-clock, Epilepsy Monitoring Unit to ensure each patient is accurately diagnosed and successfully treated. The unit is designated a Level 4 Epilepsy Center, providing the broadest range of care and treatment for pediatric and adult epilepsy conditions and seizures.

The Level IV Comprehensive Epilepsy Center provides the most comprehensive pediatric and adult epilepsy evaluation and management available in the country. The center serves as a destination treatment facility for epilepsy patients from as far as Panama and the Dominican Republic, where treatment of this kind is currently unavailable for people with intractable epilepsy.

Overview of Florida Hospital for Children

Our Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children is a full service, tertiary children's hospital with over 200 dedicated pediatric beds, including a 22 bed PICU, 10 bed Cardiac ICU, 102 NICU beds at FHFC, with an extensive network of four other Level II NICU's that bring our total number of NICU beds to over 150, 17 bed pediatric emergency department and statewide pediatric network and transport system. We started our comprehensive pediatric open heart program in 2012 and have a strong track record of positive outcomes. We also have several key destination programs including our level IV Epilepsy program. Our unparalleled network consists of 26 hospitals across the state with one children's hospital at the center and several extremely successful pediatric subspecialty programs including outreach clinics.

General Summary:

The ARNP (FNP), or PA-C under the supervision of the Physician(s) who acts as the collaborative practitioner, is responsible for:
  • Performs physical examinations of patients evaluation and treatment of illnesses and conditions related to epilepsy for pediatric through geriatric patients
  • Orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests, such as routine laboratory, X-ray, etc
  • Providing consistent high quality patient care with epilepsy team through inpatient and outpatient work
  • Monitors the patient's course of treatment and makes appropriate referral to either a physician or specialist, as needed
  • Collaborates with physician supervisor and staff, as necessary to provide consistent care to patients and support to staff
  • Displays a caring and professional attitude at all time as well as maintaining personal and professional growth
  • Independently motivated to pursue personal and professional growth
  • Rotating call on a monthly basis, including rounding one weekend a month at Florida Hospital for Children

Knowledge and Skills Required:
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of Family Nurse Practitioner or PA-C experience is required, with a preference for epilepsy related experience
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, patients, and the public.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Comfort with evaluating and treating patients of all ages (newborns through geriatrics)
  • Must demonstrate excellence in patient focused medical care & delivery of care
  • Strong medical decision making skills are a must
  • Candidate must be able to successfully pass a third-party background check and pre-employment drug screen

Required Education/Experience:
  • Master's degree in Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Minimum of 1-2 years' experience as FNP or PA-C with a preference for epilepsy related experience

Licensure, Certification, and Registration:

Current, valid Florida ARNP or PA-C license

ANCC, NCCPA (or equivalent) certification
