Job Summary The City of Asheville invites you to apply to be a part of the 2018 Parks & Recreation Department summer staff. Summer Playground Leaders work as a team to plan and facilitate weekly activity schedules. Staff are energetic and engaging while modeling appropriate behavior as they participate in all activities with summer camp participants. 
Desired Start Date: June 4, 2018
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday. Shifts Vary 7:30 A.M. - 6:30 P.M. including some weekends, nights, and holidays.

This position is a temporary/seasonal position. This position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor participation in the retirement system.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Plans and schedules daily activities for participants, ages 6-11.
  • Leads group games and activities.
  • Prepares recreation equipment for use.
  • Supervises and/or participates in recreational activities.
  • Organizes group activities.
  • Takes participants on field trips.
  • Administers first aid as needed.
  • Identifies, responds and documents participant behavioral issues.
  • Attends regular staff meetings to discuss new programs and problems.
  • Maintains a positive attitude at all times and reflects that attitude in all relationships with the public.
  • Assists in maintaining cleanliness of the facility.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Required Education & Experience Required: 
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • Adult and Child CPR/American Red Cross First Aid certifications must be current or obtained by June 5, 2017.
  • Some college level coursework.
  • Leadership experience in a day camp setting.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Working Conditions Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • General knowledge of the methods and practices of community recreation work including knowledge of the equipment and techniques, relevant rules and regulations of social, artistic, craft and/or athletic programs for children.
  •  Ability to instruct common recreational activities.
  • Ability to plan and lead age-appropriate activities for youth 5-13 years of age
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, program participants and the general public.
  • Ability to enforce rules and regulations and maintain discipline.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records.
