Job Summary
The Histocompatibility Team Leader functions to support the solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant programs for Carolinas HealthCare System by performing high complexity histocompatibility and immunogenetic testing. This position works closely with the technical and administrative leadership within the laboratory as well as physicians, surgeons and other clinical providers. This position is involved in all aspects of testing in the laboratory including HLA typing, antibody screening and donor/recipient crossmatching. Also, this position performs many additional supportive roles including regulatory/QA activities, procedure writing and review, education of students and communicating with other medical staff.
Essential Functions:
    • Oversee daily operations of the histocompatibility department
    • Ensure a functional and effective laboratory through routine equipment maintenance, quality control procedures, and monitor testing supply levels and laboratory conditions
    • Be primarily responsible for ensuring that equipment is functional and providing maintenance and troubleshooting
    • Drive testing enhancements with the help of the Director
    • Write and edit laboratory standard operating procedures
    • Train and educate testing personnel in the laboratory as well as provide education to students, residents and other medical professionals
    • Perform high complexity histocompatibility testing including donor and recipient HLA typing by molecular methods, anti-HLA antibody screening assays and flow cytometric crossmatch testing
    • Independently analyze and report patient results within the electronic medical record as well as directly to clinicians
    • Organize and coordinate sample processing and testing workflow within the laboratory
    • Effectively interact with other members of the laboratory and clinical programs while communicating complex medical information
    • Ensure a functional and effective laboratory through routine equipment maintenance, quality control procedures, and monitor testing supply levels and laboratory conditions
    • Independently drive quality assurance and performance improvement activities
    • Remain up to date with the current state of the art within the fields of laboratory medicine, especially histocompatibility, immunogenetics and flow cytometry, and participate in continuing education activities both internal and external
    • Use knowledge of the laboratory and testing methodologies to evaluate and validate new equipment and technologies
    • Be able to effectively troubleshoot instrumentation, testing performance and other issues within the laboratory
Physical Requirements
Works in a busy environment around physicians, technologists, and visitors. Must be able to actively walk and navigate around equipment. Works in an area which contains infectious materials, chemical hazards, and fire and mechanical hazards. Works in an analytical, physical and managerial environment. May be required to stoop, reach, and lift light (20 lbs.) to moderately heavy (50 lbs.) loads.

Education, Experience and Certifications
Must be an ASCP registered Medical Technologist or equivalent. A minimum of two (2) to five (5) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job functions of a leadership role. Must be able to operate equipment used in area(s) of responsibility. Thorough understanding of company product, trade terminology, quality management and control systems and techniques, testing processes including materials, work flow, scheduling, supplies, instrument operation, and company policies as standards. Ability to effectively facilitate problem solving and resolution. Ability to work with a dynamic team and demanding customers. Have extensive computer skills in Microsoft Office applications (Word and Excel in particular). Ability to work in a fast-paced, multicultural environment. Ability to plan, supervise, and perform functions of assigned areas. Ability to maintain on call flexibility to control abnormal conditions.
