Job Description

Job Summary The City of Asheville invites you to apply to be a part of the 2018 Parks & Recreation department summer staff. Outdoor Program Teen Leaders will lead youth summer camp programs focusing on both outdoor adventure and environmental science based activities. Outdoor Program Teen Leaders will put together weekly schedules and lead all activities throughout the program.

8:30am to 6pm, some weekends and overnights
Contract begins Monday, June 4, 2018 through Friday, August 3, 2018

This position is a temporary/seasonal position. This position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor participation in the retirement system.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Plans and schedules activities for youth ages 6-16.
  • Acts as leader in group or individual games.
  • Prepares outdoor recreation equipment for use.
  • Supervises and/or participates in outdoor recreational activities (hiking, camping, biking, rafting, canoeing, swimming and nature exploration).
  • Organizes group activities.
  • Plans and leads activities both on and off site, including some overnight camping trips.
  • Administers first aid as needed.
  • Attends regular staff meetings and collaborates with other program leaders.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Required Education & Experience MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • MUST be 21 or older. 
  • Must have current NC or out-of-state driver's license and ability to drive program vehicles. 
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to two semesters of college level coursework and/or one year of related experience.
  • Adult and Child CPR/American Red Cross First Aid (must have obtained by first day of work), Wilderness First Responder (preferred). 

Preference will be given to applicants with experience in the following areas:• Program planning and implementation for youth in an outdoor setting
• Prior summer camp or outdoor leadership skills preferred
• Prefer experience canoeing, rafting, hiking and leading outdoor programs for youth

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Working Conditions
  • General knowledge of the methods and practices of outdoor recreation programs including knowledge of the proper use of outdoor equipment and risk management systems.
  • The ability to instruct outdoor recreational activities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, program participants and the general public.
  • Ability to enforce rules and regulations and maintain program standards.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records.
