Job Description
Title: Engineer I - Nuclear / Mechanical - (GO) Location: North Carolina-Charlotte-Nuclear GO (180) General Office Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering entry level engineers develop engineering calculations and reports that support safe, reliable, and economic nuclear plant and fuel operation within regulatory requirements. This job requires high individual motivation in a team-oriented environment. These teams work closely with nuclear site personnel to design and implement engineering solutions. Individual work assignments will be based on the employee's educational background and Duke Energy business needs. Methods development and computer and engineering analyses include applications to reactor design, equipment performance, nuclear operations, and spent fuel storage facilities. Opportunities are available in the following disciplines and areas: Nuclear Fuel Management: Nuclear engineering or mechanical engineering applications on the Fuel Management team, specializing in nuclear fuel cost analysis and documentation, design evaluation for spent nuclear fuel wet and dry storage options, nuclear fuel purchase contract evaluation and documentation, and fuel cost and generation reporting. Structural or mechanical engineering applications specializing in nuclear fuel assembly design and nuclear fuel mechanical performance evaluations. Nuclear Safety Assessment: Nuclear or mechanical engineering applications on the nuclear reactor Safety Analysis team, specializing in analysis of reactor systems transient analysis for plant and fuel licensing and system design applications. Nuclear engineering applications on the Radiological Engineering team, specializing in radiation shielding analyses, dose rate evaluations, and nuclear design analysis of offsite and onsite radiological dose consequences. Nuclear engineering applications on the Probabilistic Risk Assessment team, specializing in the analyses of nuclear plant system reliability data, accident probabilities, and severe accident progression and consequences. Nuclear Design: Nuclear engineering applications on the nuclear reactor core design team, specializing in analysis of steady-state conditions and transient prediction, core performance testing and monitoring, operational and transient event analysis, and plant simulation for operator training. Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful candidate, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy. Basic Qualifications BS degree in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent degree from an accredited university. Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office and computer analysis programs. Demonstrated problem solving and analysis skills. Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, organize and set work priorities. Desired Qualifications Masters Degree in engineering related program Co-op or summer student experience at a nuclear utility, vendor, or contractor. Summer Intern or Co-op experience at Duke Energy Engineering Fundamentals Certification. Demonstrated technical writing skills. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated leadership ability. Demonstrated academic excellence Strong desire to work in the nuclear power industry Specific Requirements Must qualify and meet requirements for nuclear station unescorted access/security clearance. Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, clothing, ear plugs, fall protection, etc.) as needed. Must be able to pass required Engineering Training requirements. Working Conditions Office and plant environment - requires walking, light lifting, infrequent climbing, occasional exposure to temperature, noise, and radiation. Highly procedural and process-oriented structure due to strict regulatory requirements. Must be able to work some weekends, holidays, overtime, and call-outs as needed to support plant maintenance outages and emergent problems. Some "on-call" duty responsibilities may apply.
