Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission

The newly formed Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission (ABRSC) is seeking an individual to execute the first year program of work. This individual will work as an independent contractor and will report activity and accomplishments to the executive committee of the ABRSC on a monthly basis.

The proposed contract amount will be $2500 per month and is expected to last approximately 9 months. The ideal candidate will work from home or a current office setting they are involved with and will be responsible for the office expense and technology. Travel, dues, and other promotional expenses will be paid by the ABRSC, oversight for the expenditure of funds will be provided by the executive committee. For meetings and presentations to prospective clients, the Asheville Chamber of Commerce, the City of Asheville, or Buncombe County will provide meeting facilities for the Sports Commission’s use.

It is possible the contractor would be a primary consideration to lead the second year of the ABRSC, perhaps as a full time employee of the commission.

Traits and skills

1. Self motivated individual with both a short term and long term perspective. Must understand the vision of the ABRSC and they need to have a strong, results oriented, work ethic.
2. Strong marketing background.
3. Highly organized.
4. Computer/social media literate.
5. Deep seated knowledge of athletics and the local region. The ideal candidate will have contacts within the Western North Carolina athletic community and be able to cultivate new relationships within the entire community.
6. Ability to create and present effective sales communications to prospective clients in a professional manner.
7. Willingness and energy to solicit new sporting events for Buncombe County. The ideal candidate will be skilled in cold call tactics and have the ability to work trade show settings to acquire new contacts.
8. Fiscal acumen and responsibility, an ability to work from budgets and control cost is imperative.
9. Fund raising skills. This position will need to build relationships to further the financial stability of the ABRSC and also to assist in funding assistance for athletic events.
10. Demonstrated ability to make good judgments and build community consensus.
11. Ability to network and build a volunteer event base.
12. Experienced in event organization, planning, and execution.

First year, broad areas of goals will include:

1. Work with executive committee members to create a ABRSC brand and year one work/activity plan.
2. Reach out and attract new events
a. (#) of prospects in “pipeline”
b. (#) of groups that have received a proposal from ABRSC
c. (#) of booked groups
3. Inventory current facilities and build relationships with facility managers in order to provide a high level of service to prospective events.
4. Work closely with community leaders to develop and provide the services needed to insure the SoCon Tournaments are executed flawlessly. Key areas to develop are:
a. Community partners in ticket sales
b. Fundraising/sponsorship development
c. School concierge volunteers
d. Special events planning and execution team
e. Other projects as required.
5. Provide support and enhance four current athletic events currently in the community.
6. Reach-out tactics will include direct solicitation (phone, email, social media, etc), tradeshow participation, and networking.
7. Prioritize the need for off season bookings and on brand events.
8. Establish relationships to assist in long –term financial sustainability of the ABRSC.
